Keep your fridge smelling fresh

The human nose is a pretty amazing thing. It can detect over 1 trillion different scents and smells. Yes, you read that right. 1 trillion! While many of these smells are truly wonderful, plenty aren’t – like those worrying ‘mystery’ odours that can quickly take hold inside your commercial refrigerators and cool rooms if you’re not careful.

The good news is, it’s surprisingly easy to put an end to fridge odours. To help, we’ve put together this simple 3-step ‘Fresh Fridge’ checklist:

1) Regular Deep Cleans

It may seem obvious. But in many instances, fridge odours are simply the result of bacteria building up due to a lack of proper cleaning of the inside. Regular wipe downs are always important, but if it’s been a while since you last emptied your fridges to conduct a deep clean, inside and out, this should be your first step. We’ve actually written a whole blog specifically about how to safely clean your commercial refrigerators. You can read it here.

In addition to being cleaner and fresher, regular deep cleans will also support the overall efficiency and performance of your commercial refrigerators – just like a car engine always runs better after a service.

2) Cleaning The Outside

Kitchen smells can be stubborn things. Certain odours may linger in your refrigerator even after a deep clean. When this happens, consider using the correct cleaning tools for the outside of your refrigerator too. To ensure a good clean of your commercial fridge and to prevent rust building on its stainless steel, use alkaline, alkaline-chlorinated, or non-chloride cleaners. It is important to avoid using hydrochloric acid cleaners as this can cause corrosion, pitting and stress corrosion cracking of stainless steel, even if diluted. Finally, after using these cleaners to refresh your commercial refrigerator, it is important to rinse the areas cleaned with water and dry it immediately for best results.

3) Stop smells before they start

Like many things in life, prevention is always the best policy when it comes to eliminating refrigerator odours from your kitchen. Get on the front foot when it comes to labelling and dating your food items. Clean up spills quickly. Regularly check for foods that have gone off or are likely to ‘turn’ soon. Throw away old and spoiled items. Keep your shelves organised. A tidy, organised refrigerator is almost always a better-smelling one!

Your nose always knows. So, if your fridge isn’t smelling quite right, be sure to take action!
