We’re Ready, Are You?

In preparation for the next phase of the F-Gas Regulation, True Refrigeration is helping foodservice operators understand the changes that the new legislation will bring.

The F-Gas Regulation aims to reduce Global Warming emissions caused by F-Gases (the refrigerants typically found in heating and cooling applications) and is part of the European climate change agenda as set out in the EU Low Carbon Roadmap.

In preparation for the coming changes, True is producing BE READY, a campaign intended to educate operators on the legislation, as well as the impact of refrigeration on businesses, sustainability, and the environment.

Reducing Emission Levels

In effect since 2015, the eventual goal of the Legislation is a 79% reduction in the use of HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons) by 2030, encouraging manufacturers, service companies and operators to adopt technologies operating on refrigerants with significantly lower Global Warming Potential (GWP).

To get there, the next big changes will come into effect on January 2020 and may impact operators in areas such as the service and maintenance of existing refrigeration equipment and the availability of like-for-like replacements.

True’s new BE READY initiative hopes to educate operators.

Are You Ready?

If your business owns or operates integral freezer cabinets, large coolers, larger multidecks, coldrooms or remote systems, which are more than a couple of years old, then you may have equipment operating on F-Gas (R404A), one of the high GWP refrigerant gasses which will be banned from sale in new equipment from January.

The 2020 ban also includes service restrictions on larger systems that contain a large amount of high GWP gas, are now being limited to using reclaimed rather than new supplies.

Technicians will still be allowed to use new/virgin gas to recharge integral units (until 2030), however, the reduced availability overall is already resulting in drastically increased gas costs which could have a significant impact on the cost of service.

True experts informing operators of regulatory changes at HOST 2019.

True’s BE READY Campaign aims to make operators and consumers aware of the implications the F-Gas Regulation may have on their businesses, educating them on both the environmental and fiscal impact.

The Campaign, which launched at this year’s HOST Show, will be part of an ongoing initiative, in which True intend to support and educate those in the hospitality industry.

The aim of the Campaign is to allow the hospitality industry to become more environmentally responsible, achieve targets to reduce energy consumption, save money, and supply them with a better, more reliable refrigeration product.

Natural Refrigeration – It’s the Future

While F-Gas and other Regulations work to phase out environmentally unfriendly refrigerants which damage the planet, there is an alternative already available today.

Hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerants are natural, non-toxic gasses that have no ozone-depleting properties and low global warming potential. For this reason, they have been selected as the environmentally friendly choice of refrigerant for new commercial refrigeration, after being used widely for many years in domestic refrigeration.

True has been testing HC refrigerant for over a decade.

True first started testing R290 HC, a highly refined propane, in 2007. Since then, True’s Natural Refrigeration development initiative has seen the redevelopment of its entire product offering, and in 2020, True will complete the transition to 100% HC.

As a result of this investment, True now produce several of the most energy-efficient commercial refrigeration products currently available on the market.
